In Holland, you can still find windmills all over the country. As bakers we are mainly interested in the flour milling kind of course.
A flour producing mill, especially the ones that produce the high quality organic flour that makes for wonderful bread, is something which we think should be sponsored by regular visits.
Almost every province in Holland still has active flour producing windmills.
You can find a list here and see if there’s one in your neighborhood that you can go and check out.
For us buying flour from a local mill has proven to be the best option for obtaining high quality (organic) flour at very reasonable prices. Supermarkets do not sell this quality and in organic stores you will usually find a more limited selection at higher prices.
